Stefania Tiziana Almazán Casali – President
Stefania is a second year master’s student studying environmental policy and planning. She is a Mexico City native with a background in Economics. Her interests revolve around sustainable development and its interactions with community engagement, natural resource conflict management and environmental mediation. She is particularly interested in water related topics. She has been involved with SWB since 2014 in the Peru project and has been a co-leader for the team since January 2015. She participated in a pre-implementation and implementation trip to Peru and is now planning a trip for May 2016.
Michelle Bohrson – Engagement Chair
Michelle is a second year masters duel degree student studying urban planning. Her academic concentration is in international development and resilient cities. She has worked with SWB since fall of 2015 on project development and the Liberia team.
Tara Narayaran – Recruitment Chair
My role involves coordinating our recruitment and outreach efforts across U-M. I help interested students and project leaders coordinate, as well as ensure SWB representation at events and platforms that enable us to reach out to students on campus.
Jose Alfaro – Co-founder & Faculty Advisor
Dr. Alfaro’s interests revolve around sustainable development for less industrialized countries. His expertise is on the use of complex systems to develop policy planning tools for the deployment of renewable energy with complementary goals of electrification and sustainable development. His present research studies the uses of technology in sustainable development in particular small energy production and its nexus with agriculture, the participatory design and modeling process, and the frameworks required for sustainable technology transfer at small and medium scales.
Dr. Alfaro’s teaching takes advantage of his 18 year career in the development space as a volunteer and practitioner as well as his time in industry performing global research and development projects. His classes focus on the appropriate engagement with communities for sustainable development, ethics of international engagement, and the use of appropriate technology with communities.

Derek Martin – Peru Project Leader
Derek is a 2nd year Master’s student in SNRE’s Sustainable Systems track. From Cleveland OH, Derek spent several years working as an accountant for the University of Michigan before coming back to school to transition his career into environmental concerns. His master’s project is creating an economic supply curve for existing carbon dioxide removal technologies. Derek has been a part of SWB since Sept. 2015 and has been to Peru twice to participate in the creation of four aquaponics systems, the construction of a water reservoir, and the implementation of an annual health survey. He enjoys the sustainable development focus of SWB along with the camaraderie of the team.
Lauren Murray – SustainEd Project Leader
Lauren is a senior studying Program in the Environment, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and French. Her specialization in PitE is environmental education. She has worked with SWB and SustainED since Winter 2016.
Janis Lai – Research and Development Project Leader
Janis is a project leader of Team Project Development. She is currently a PhD student in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences. Fun facts: She likes to read, and she has a husky and a golden retriever.
